Welcome to Red Cross Basic Life Support.  EMR is your first step into the world of professional pre-hospital medicine. Below you will find important information to help you prepare for your course, including scheduling and location details, how to access your pre-course study material and prerequisite course, and preparation tips. Your Classroom

Vancouver Learning Center

  • 8168 Granville St (at 66th Ave), Unit 209

  • Plenty of free parking nearby; served by bus route #10

  • Safeway, Starbucks, and a wonderful assortment of restaurants within a few minutes walk

For your convenience, our learning centers include drinking water, hot water, coffee, tea and a small fridge and microwave.

Course Durations

See your course description for the start-time of the session for which you registered. 

Full Courses

  • Basic Life Support (Full Course): 4 Hours (includes one 15 minute break)
  • Basic Life Support (Full Course + Oxygen Administration & Airway Management): 6 Hours (includes one 30 minute break)

Recertification Courses

  • Basic Life Support (Recert): 2 Hours (No breaks)
  • Basic Life Support (Recert with Oxygen Administration & Airway Management): 4 Hours (includes one 15 minute break)

Classroom Expectations

Clothing, Materials and Equipment

Please bring everything you need for a full day of class, including:

  • Notebook, pencils/pens
  • Refillable water bottle or hot beverage container (Drinking water and coffee are provided)
  • Lunch and snacks as required
    • We have a small fridge and microwave in the classroom
    • There are also plenty of restaurants within a 5 minute walk
  • We will provide all required PPE & necessary medical equipment.

Punctuality and Attendance

  • 100% attendance is required for successful completion of your course. In the case of an unavoidable absence, we will do our best to schedule into a later class to complete your certification; a course rescheduling fee will apply.

    • Please do not ask your instructor for ANY time off from your program; you will not be able to complete your certification.

  • Late entries are disruptive. You are expected to be in class and ready to start at the scheduled class start time.  Late entries may not be allowed entry into the class, with no refund.

Your Learning Materials

Your study materials are included in the cost of the course.

  • The Canadian Red Cross Basic Life Support Field Guide is yours to keep and reference
  • All required equipment, including PPE, will be provided to you

Assessments and Certification​

Written: There is a 20 question, multiple choice knowledge assessment ( (30 questions for BLS with O2 and Airway Management).  A minimum score of 75% is required to pass.

Practical: Practical assessments are done on an ongoing basis throughout the course.

Certification: Upon successful completion of all course requirements and assessments, you will receive the following certificates:

  • Canadian Red Cross Basic Life Support (Formerly CPR-HCP) 

  • Optional: Canadian Red Cross Oxygen Administration

  • Optional: Canadian Red Cross Airway Management
