EMR License Prep

New Student Information

Welcome to Our Community

Welcome to Coast Medical Training’s EMALB License Prep for Emergency Medical Responder licensing candidates.  If you have signed up for this course, your practical licensing exam is probably imminent, and I would imagine you hope to get the most out of these 4 days of intensive training. We will try to focus as much of your in-class time will focus on scenarios and demonstration of practical skills, but you can make it easier to do that by brushing up on some of the knowledge and structure pieces before your first day.

Top Priority!!!

To help with this, I have created this short preparation guide (below) to help you prepare for your preparation course – we don’t expect you to be perfect, but the more you are familiar with, the more beneficial your training will be, and the better prepared you will feel for your exam.

Please note things that you find difficult, and arrive on the first day with a list of questions in hand.

Class Schedule

Four Consecutive Days, 9 AM – 5 PM

  • Day 1: Skills Reviews, Medical Scenarios and Guidelines
  • Day 2: Medical + Trauma Scenarios and Guidelines
  • Day 3: Trauma Scenarios and Guidelines
  • Day 4: Roundup / Student Directed

Important: This is not a certificate course* – you are encouraged to take part in the full four days of training, but feel free to drop in for whatever days or lessons you feel you need.  However, this schedule is a VERY rough estimate – your instructor will make changes based on the demonstrated needs and skills of the students in class at any given time, so you should keep in close contact to make sure you don’t miss the content that is important to you.

* If you are taking this course for continuing education credits (CECs), 100% attendance is mandatory, along with an assessment at the end of the course.  Upon successful completion, you will receive and EMR Skills Refresher certificate.

Preparation Guide

Use the checklist below as a guide for your review and preparation for the in-class training.   Note that you can download the EMR TGPs in the materials section, below.

Note any weak points, or skills that you are unfamiliar with.

This is not a comprehensive list, but it should give you a good idea of the major points to review and practice, and a good common foundation for all training participants.

Patient Assessment Model

  • Memorize the PAM really, really well.  There are a few different approaches to this – you can find ours in the attached Training Guidelines and Protocols (TGPs) but if the one you are familiar with is slightly different, that’s fine too.
  • Check out this video of two CWMT instructors demonstrating a patient assessment.

Medications

  • Be very familiar with your medications.  You can be tested on up to 10 medications – make sure you are comfortable with their indications, contraindications, and cautions. Drug monographs can be found in the TGPs.
  • Know your six rights of medications, or whatever medication administration checklist you have been using in your studies.

Practice Guidelines

  • Review the practice guidelines for managing medical
    emergencies, including :
    • Cardiosuggestive Chest Pain
    • Pulmonary Edema
    • Cardiac Arrest
    • Altered Mental Status
    • Diabetic
    • Opioid Overdose
    • Seizure
    • Choking Emergency
  • Know your Oxygen Administration Criteria.
  • Be familiar with the approach to spinal injuries, including when and how to apply Nexus.

Skills

  • Primary Survey Interventions
    • Know how to recognize and respond to a patient who is not managing their own
      airway.
    • Recognize signs of ineffective respirations, and respond appropriately.
    • Conduct a rapid body search.
    • Identify need for suction, and describe the use of suction appropriately.
  • Vitals Signs (Practice and be able to competently assess the following)
    • Glasgow Coma Scale (review this well!)
    • Blood Pressure
    • Pulse Rate
    • Respiratory Rate
    • Skin Condition
    • Pupils
    • Pulse Oximetry
    • Temperature
    • Blood Glucose Level (Describe)

Study and Practice Materials

  • EMR Training Guidelines and Protocols (PDF access here, hardcopy distributed in class).
  • Please bring your stethoscope and blood pressure cuff to class.  If you don’t have one, let us know – we have some spares lying around.
  • All other materials will be provided for you.

EMR Classroom Expectations

Clothing, Materials and Equipment

Please bring everything you need for a full day of class, including:

  • Notebook, pencils/pens
  • Refillable water bottle or hot beverage container (Drinking water and coffee are provided)
  • Lunch and snacks
  • We have a small fridge and microwave in the classroom
  • There are also plenty of restaurants within a 5 minute walk
  • We will provide all required PPE & necessary medical equipment.

Punctuality and Attendance

  • If you are going to be late or miss time, please inform your instructor to minimize disruptions.
    • If you are late or miss content, do not expect the instructor to go over it again.  There is a lot of material to cover, and unnecessary repetition is unfair to other students.
  • If you require certification, 100% attendance is required.
